NRCFOSS Mumbai Node's activities ...

Sessions conducted to get started with FOSS at NRCFOSS's Mumbai node located at VJTI. Most of the sessions are held on weekends and similar sessions are planned in forthcoming weeks.

NRCFOSS Mumbai node started a series of "Getting Started with FOSS" in the month of September 2007.

The primary audience of this series included a set of "interested" students from VJTI college, pursuing MCA from the college. This report is a summary of those sessions in that series.

 

Session 1: About NRCFOSS Node, and Getting started with FOSS

Mehul introduced the NRCFOSS Node of Mumbai and explained the objectives behind the Computer Lab at VJTI's mechanical department. Students learnt about the theories behind the Free Operating system's internals and steps before installing a Linux distribution.

Time: 1600 hrs to 1900 hrs

Session 2: Installing Ubuntu Linux

Mrugesh and Vihan further continued with the internals of the OS. Vihan went on to explain the details of the filesystem under any Linux distribution. Mrugesh demonstrated the installation of Ubuntu Linux 7.04 explaining each step of installation. Students installed Ubuntu Linux alongside on client computers.

Session 3: Basic commands under a Linux distribution - Part 1

Anurag explained basic commands under a Linux distribution. Navigating through directories, Creating users, information about the password file and so on.

Time: 1500 hrs to 1700 hrs

Session 4: Basic commands under a Linux distribution - Part 2

Mrugesh further continued with commands. The session specifically dealt with commands related to the permissions of a file.

More sessions are planned in forthcoming weeks and would be held on weekends.

Before this series, two other sessions on Bash Scripting were held in the month of July.

Anurag and Mrugesh conducted a session on BASH Scripting explaining Function, Shell Arithmetic, Positional Parameters and Regular Expressions.
