Mapping in Mumbai takes off at last

The first Mumbai OSM sprint took place on 13th and 14th September 2008 at the offices of progress partners in Worli. On the first day, GPS tracks were compared with theYahoo! satellite images and it was found that the satellite images were reasonably accurate. An attempt was made to programmatically rectifiy the existing AND data, but it was found that the offset was not consistent, and further, edits had already been done, so there is no point in doing it. The existing data is so badly b0rked that it is only helpful to give a hint of the road names.

Over two days some major north south roads were rectified, versova is looking decent, bandra-kurla complex is on the map and slowly other parts of Mumbai are starting to look motorable. The greatest gain is that Saswata of progress partners has volunteered to put two computers with bandwidth available every saturday for youngsters to use for mapping. JTD, on behalf of FSF has promised to make a couple of GPS loggers available for this purpose. More details here
