One-Day Seminar cum Workshop on GIS Tools

A one-day Free Awareness Seminar was conducted on 13th of October 2009 at Institute of Remote Sensing, Anna University Chennai, which was jointly organised by NRC-FOSS,AU-KBC Research Centre, kCube Consultancy Services and IRS, Anna University. Nearly 50 participants who were domain experts  from Industry and Acadamic Institutions. 

The seminar was inaugurated by the registrar of Anna University. The Director of the institute, Ms Latha P M of NRC-FOSS and Mr Kumaran from Kcube also addressed the audience.

After tea, the main sessions started. Mr Kumaran of Kcube gave an overview of FOSS tools used in GIS. This was followed by a talk by Mr Ravikumar, an eminent geologist who is on the board of the Indian Chapter of OSGEO - the open source GIS organisation. Mr Nagesh Kolagani then gave a description of the work done in mapping a village in Andhra and showed the power of GIS in helping the village to develop. This was followed by case studies presented by Kcube showing open source tools in action. Mr Kenneth Gonsalves of NRC-FOSS gave a presentation on Open Street Map. After lunch there were hands-on tutorials on the various tools that had been mentioned. Prominent among the tools were GRASS and QGIS which are on par with any proprietary tool available.

The participants were very impressed and the feedback was extremely positive.
